Gastritis
What is Gastritis?
Gastritis is the inflammation of the stomach lining. In children, it can occur suddenly (acute) or develop over time (chronic). It can cause discomfort, pain, or even vomiting, and should not be ignored.
Causes of Gastritis in Children
- Infections: Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is a common bacterial cause.
- Medications: Long-term use of NSAIDs like ibuprofen.
- Stress: Physical or emotional stress can affect the stomach lining.
- Autoimmune Disorders: Where the body mistakenly attacks the stomach lining.
- Food Allergies or Sensitivities
Common Symptoms
- Stomach pain or burning sensation
- Nausea or vomiting
- Loss of appetite
- Bloating or burping
- Blood in vomit or stool (in severe cases)
When to See a Specialist
If your child complains of regular stomach pain, refuses to eat, or shows signs of vomiting with blood, it’s important to consult a pediatric gastroenterologist. Early diagnosis helps prevent complications and ensures proper treatment.
Diagnosis
At my clinic, I use a combination of:
- Medical history and physical examination
- Blood and stool tests
- Breath tests for H. pylori
- Endoscopy (in selected cases)
Treatment Approach
Treatment depends on the cause:
- For H. pylori infection: Antibiotics + acid-reducing medications
- Avoiding triggers: Like NSAIDs or specific foods
- Dietary changes: Bland, non-irritating foods
- Probiotics and supportive care
